A member asked:

I get odd tiny piece of mucus in toilet bowl if i strain sometimes or when constipated. is that normal? there's no visible blood. stool looks normal. when should i worry?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

We only worry about copious amounts of mucus associated with other bowel irregularities in which inflammatory bowel disease is suspected. In these cases referral to a gastroenterologist for evaluation, testing and treatment is recommended. Small amounts of mucus in a normal BM can occur with constipation or irritable bowel syndrome.
