NEEDS EVALUATION: An elevated CEA is worrisome, but sometimes non-specific especially in smokers. But now that they found it a work-up is in order, including checking the lungs of a smoker for lung cancer. Sometimes finding something is very difficult and he may need to be followed for a time until somethinng abnormal shows up.
