The nasal passages of small infants are relatively tiny. Even small amounts of mucus can plug them. Fragrances/dust/odors from soaps in their bed linen or clothing all can trigger an outpouring of mucus designed to wash them away. Gentile removal using nasal saline and a bulb suction helps as does removing all triggering factors. It is less a problem when they get bigger/older.
