A member asked:

I keep getting canker sores on corner of my mouth and now gums. can canker sores/ulcers be a form of cold sores even though my usual cold sores for years are blisters that crust over?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

They are not the same. A cold sore is a virus, herpes simplex virus-1. Causes are common cold, fever, flu, sun exposure, stress, hormonal changes, and trauma to area. A canker sore is from stress, infection, vitamin deficiencies, hot spicy foods and a build up of acid in saliva. Both are treatable but only the cold sore is contagious.
