Yes, medication can cause hepatitis. However, we could not rule out progressive hepatitis from the initial viral infection, especially you are infected with hepatitis B or C. So in this case, steps need to be carried out for defining the etiology. I hope you have been followed by a gastroenterologist or a hepatologist.

Most of these medications don’t affect liver enzymes. A small number of patients on Cymbalta and famotidine see a temporary, unimportant rise in liver enzymes. In very rare cases with Cymbalta, the liver levels jump up twenty times higher than normal or more, and a person would experience severe abdominal pain and a yellowing of the skin and eyes. That would be a medical emergency.
