A small amount plaque should cause no problems. It's the accumulation of plaque with bacteria that can enter your system over time and result in many disease entities, diabetes, heart attack, and a stroke and other problems. Have plaque and calculus removed from teeth and practice good oral hygiene.

Plaque is combination of food debris and bacteria. Bacteria causes acid formation which etches calcium out of tooth enamel leaving a bacteria-filled hole (cavity) and/or digestive enzymes that literally eat away at your gums. Swallowed plaque is destroyed by gastric acids & enzymes. Tooth decay & gum disease allow toxins to enter blood stream. Sounds like you're overdue for regular dental care.
