A member asked:

Beta blockers reduce max hr during aerobic exercise. i am on 50mg metoprolol. my predicted max was 140, but i have achieved up to 170 bpm with strenous exertion. i can hold 140-160 bpm without any pain or trouble. are the bb equations wrong?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Were the equations dose based? 50 mgs of.metoprolol is a mild to moderate dose. Some patients take 100 mgs twice a day. In any event when your heart rate reaches over 140/ min, you're most likely overriding beta blockade. I doubt there's a precise way to accurately predict beta blockers' effect on your heart rate during vigorous exercise.
