A member asked:

Can multilevel thoracic disc bulges and herniations cause chest pain similar to heart attack symptoms? recent thoracic mri showed multilevel stenosis and herniations but no nerve impingement. a nuclear stress test showed no problems with my heart?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Disc bulges&herniations in the thoracic spine could well be a cause of chest wall pain but usually by impinging on nerve roots exiting the upper thoracic spine. I would ask your neurologist or neurosurgeon if any of your disc problems are pressing on the spinal cord itself & are a potential cause of chest pains different from the radicular pains which are usually sharp & provoked by a deep breath.
