A member asked:

I have epilepsy/seizures due to a tumor in my brain but it didn't grow past 2 year(mri) and with my medication(lamotrigene) i haven't have epilepsy for 2 years. can nerve conduction study and emg trigger my epilepsy/seizure? thanks?

Nerve conduction studies evaluate the peripheral nerve (down the line) function assessing the speed of information between two segments. Nothing in this test should trigger the central nervous system where seizures originate. Stress does have some potential for bringing on an event if your control is marginal, but this stress would be equal to some minor injury you sustain in normal life.

EMG/ nerve conduction testing is very safe and has NEVER caused an epileptic event. But some patients do develop panic attacks secondary to medical testing stress which might result in a secondary seizure. If your lamotrigine serum level is within a therapeutic range, there should be adequate protection.
