Post operative urinary retention[POUR] is normal after surgical procedures. The preoperative medications and the type of anesthesia have a lot to do with the urinary retention. Intermittent catheterization and a alpha blocker such as Tamsulosin is usually recommended and takes up to 72 hours for normal urinary to return.
