These sort of tests are normally used when there is some ambiguity in the initial evaluation. Since dermoids contain multiple tissue type there are multiple possibilities for malignant change. Most of the time they are just being careful not to overlook anything, and most dermoids are benign. Waiting for the final report can certainly be a little stressful.
