Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the cells lining the lower esophagus change and become abnormal. This can occur as a result of long-term acid reflux disease (GERD) and is considered a precancerous condition. The diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus requires a biopsy during an upper endoscopy procedure. It's possible for Barrett's esophagus to be missed if it is hidden by esophagitis.
