The sigmoid colon is a storage area at the end of the digestive tract. Its only function is water extraction and storage until an emptying event. Ability to empty effectively depends on contracting ring shaped muscle fibers in its walls assisted by the diaphragm and external belly muscles. More effective emptying requires emptying more often so the colon muscles don't get overstretched.
