I often prescribe mirtazepine (Remeron) at night time for patients who have depression complicated with poor diet and low weight. Although Remeron does not directly affect diabetes or the A1c level, it may increase appetite, weight (up to 77%), and cholesterol. If those side effects are concerning, specific goals for weight and mood should be considered with the prescribing provider.
