My child had strep. he gave it to me and i started a zpak, 2 pills on day one and 1 pill yesterday. its had no effect, hasnt even knocked out the fever in the last 48 hours. ive just been switched to augmentin 850mg. i want to confirm, is that safe?

Group A streptococci, causative organism for strep throat, remains very sensitive to penicillins but much less so to azithromycin (Z-Pak). Augmentin, combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, should be safe and effective.

It is a safe medication, but a review of side effects with your Pharmacist is important information. Watch for GI upset and consider the use of a probiotic while taking the medication. Discuss the 850 v 500 mg dose with your physician.
