Anxiety can indeed compromise our ability to think, focus, concentrate, and communicate. When anxiety is controlled, however, the symptoms stabilize. Dementia is a general term to describe a host of progressive disorders resulting in ongoing intellectual deterioration. Anxiety and/or depression may be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease in the previously emotionally stable elderly.
