A member asked:

My doctor prescribed 25 mg of atenolol for anxiety. dementia runs in my family and i am concerned if i stay on it long term it could affect my short term memory. do you know if it will and should i only stay on it for a short amount of time?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Atenolol can cause confusion, fatigue, and depression resulting in both cognitive and emotional problems. But low-dose medication may have minimal issues, and the adverse effects would depart once the drug is discontinued, as this is NOT permanent. Get a second opinion regarding your anxiety, as this may be an early sign of emerging degenerative brain issues.
