Sleep Study: I would recommend going to see an ENT dr. Maybe do a little family research on sleep disorders especially ffi.

Childhood Insomnia: Childhood insomnia persisting into adulthood may or may not have a genetic basis. Entities causing insomnia, eg childhood sleep related breathing disorders, restless legs syndrome & periodic limb movement, may begin in childhood and persist into adulthood. Psychiatric factors & a vicious cycle caused by medications are also not uncommon. Consultation with a sleep specialist/sleep study is needed.

Insomnia & SDB: Insomnia can be related to a sleep disordered breathing problem. It is not normal to have to use pills to get to sleep. There is some excellent information on dr steven y. Parkswebsite from new york city. I think this site can give you the information you are looking for. He is an ent. Fantastic information there.
