This is common in kids. If the injury did not knock him out, cause instability, memory loss or other symptoms he should do fine. The initial knot is blood under the scalp that gradually breaks down leaving a bruise. I would expect off & on headaches this week, or not. Let him sleep but check on him without waking him. If he starts vomiting repeatedly take him back.

Should be monitored for concussion symptoms, short and long term. Can have concussion without loss of consciousness. Frequent in contact sports.

Apparently, he suffered at the least scattered bruising over his face and scalp. Allow him to sleep, as he has been cleared by the ER staff. If he exhibits nausea and vomiting, blurring or doubling of vision, confusion, dizziness and/or imbalance, it is time to return to ER. Otherwise, he will rapidly recover.
