They might or might not. Only his doctors can judge this; you'll need to ask them. Regardless of the cause (hemorrhagic stroke or any other), a lot more information is needed to judge what someone in a coma is experiencing, such as EEG, MRI, CT scan, and detailed neurological exam by an expert. In most of these patients, it is not clear whether they hear us or not, and certainly whether they can understand. My usual approach is to assume that they can hear, even if they cannot communicate that they do. That is what I would want if you were me in the coma. Good luck.

There is a full range of receptive communication and memory in survivors of coma. Hospital staff and families usually do try to communicate positive and encouraging statements and avoid voicing concerns about negative outcomes at the bedside.
