Diet and physical exercise are critical for lifestyle changes and keeping diabetes at bay. Specifically losing weight would help the most in the long run. Working with your doc towards goals is best.

You A1c indicates that you have diabetes. It warrants an on-going management by a physician. If you can manage to lose 10% of your body weight, exercise at least 30 minutes/day and adjust your diet accord to the recommendations of your doctor and a nutritionist, you may be able to manage the illness. However, going on medication may be needed to ensure proper control of diabetes, it is not a sin!
