The way the hormonal oral contraceptive pill works is by modulating the levels of estrogen and progesterone so that the body won't ovulate. The uterine lining is still built up every month because of the estrogen. By taking only the hormone pills, you are not allowing your body to slough off the uterine lining. Expect a heavier period. Ask your Dr about a progesterone only pill for no periods

With birth control pills you can skip actually taking the placebo pills as long as your timing stays on course and you take nothing the days you are to take the placebo pills. They are provided to give patients the spacing needed between the active pills.
