We only recommend it for severe oropharyngeal pain and pain with swallowing (odynophagia) in certain conditions. Yes, it works well but your mouth is completely numb with the solution. Common OTC analgesics such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, etc., are usually used first. Antibiotic treatment for the cause such as strep throat infection is effective for inflammatory/pain alleviation.
