This could be residual from the lung injury from the virus & if so would gradually fade. It could also indicate a very mild form of asthma called cough variant asthma that can be hard to diagnose because of its mild symptoms. Discuss this with his doc at his next visit.

Nocturnal cough a symptom of asthma, or related to position. Post nasal drip and GERD may contribute to the cough. A dry hacking cough may indicate bronchospasm. Keep the room very clean, dust free and wash the bed linens in hot water. A mattress and pillow cover may be useful. If he has continued night time cough, please follow up. Watch for signs of wheezing and shortness of breath.
