The brackets do not. Lack of proper oral hygiene does.

Braces do not cause decay. Bacteria converts food debris into hydrochloric acid which in turn damages teeth (decalcification), and digestive enzymes that cause gum disease. Optimal oral hygiene coupled with appropriate dental recare appointments are obligatory. Talk to a specialist Orthodontist for risks verses rewards, and your part in preventing damage.
