Controversial: This is a topic that i dont think there is a straightforward answer for! a vegetarian diet can be healthy because you lower your saturated fat intake from animal fat! however, it is not the end all answer to eating healthy! I have encountered many obese vegetarians and vegetarians with terrible cholestrol panels. I believe a well balanced diet with lean meets can be just as healthy or healthier!

Veg diet is great!: No question as to safety of vegetarian diet. At least a quarter of the world's population is vegetarian. In fact, there are more health benefits to a vegetarian diet than there are in a carnivorous diet. You are more likely to meet your daily needs of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Lose weight, avoid some cancers and avoid the artificial hormones found in meat products these days.

Variety: The basis of a healthy diet (vegetarian or not) should be a wide variety of vegetables, preferably organic-try vegies of all colors as colors represent key nutrients. Adequate protein is important, from beans, nuts, seeds, organic dairy & eggs. A moderate amount of fruit- limit tropical fruits. Moderate whole grains. Avoid fried foods & gmo foods- foods with corn/soy or their oils unless organic.

Is there really a healthy vegetarian diet?

Yes, very healthy!: This seems like a strange question to me as vegetarian diets are generally considered quite healthy. Research shows vegetarian diets are associated with decreased risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes & hypertension. The basis of any healthy diet should be a variety of fruits & vegies. Beans, nuts, eggs & dairy provide plenty of protein. See www.Sciencedaily.Com/releases/2009/07/090701103002.Htm.

I don't know if that is what monzttr7 meant; I don't necessarily associate "bulked up" with health, but vegetarians can be very bulked up and strong. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pw5K3rBNjc

Variation: Be sure to get a good mix of fiber and protein with your veggies. It is easy to subsist on pizza and pasta and be "vegetarian", but not necessarily healthy. Tofu and legumes (beans, chickpeas) are great sources of protein. Also lentils and quinoa. These are all great options to add to salads and stir fries. Keep it varied and interesting and you will never miss the meat!

Fruits Vegetables: Fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, when you mix a legume and a whole grain you get a complete protein, like corn and lima beans, wheat (pita) and chickpeas etc. Also good fats, avocado or polyunsaturated oils. If you eat eggs, they are a complete protein, and high in omega three healthy fats.

See below: 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Complex carbohydrates in the form of whole grains, should make up 1/4 of your plate servings. 1/2 your plate should be fresh fruits and or vegetables. And 1/4 of your plate should be protein. Beans and legumes are also healthy carbohydrates. Avoid too much fat, fried foods.
