A member asked:

If someone gets hypertension because of obesity and starts bp meds, then loses the weight after a year and improves lifestyle habits that caused the hypertension how does the doctor know when to stop the meds? will the bp sink too low?

Congratulatios to you or whoever has has successfully moderated his or her lifestyle. Probably ou will live years longer! The doctor will know whether and when to change (or stop?) the medications based primarily on what your BPs are. If in a safe range, perhaps the drugs can be stopped entirely. Discuss with your doctor. Good luck!

Not all hypertension relates to body weight, keeping weight optimal remains critical regardless for a variety of medical reasons. Decisions are made on blood pressure readings and medication is usually decreased or discontinued if BP’s are consistently in the normal range. Technique of checking BP is critical as readings are very sensitive to many parameters.
