Each and every orthodontic case is different, and to guess your dentist's reasoning without knowing exactly what treatment was rendered is not prudent. Please ask your dentist for a definitive answer.

Retainers are purposed to provide stability for your new occlusal relationships. We always provide both upper and lower retention appliances, whether fixed or removable. That is considered to be Standard of Care. Speak to your treating Dentist or specialist Orthodontist as to why the exception in your case. He/she must have a good reason.
