A member asked:

Is the prozone effect with an rpr lab test common? and does the prozone effect also occur with an hiv 1/2 ab lab test? negative for hiv ab at 14 weeks and had a negative rpr at 17 weeks?

The prozone effect causes false negative tests in secondary syphilis, so if you are concerned about recent exposure (primary syphilis) it is not a factor. There is no reported prozone effect with HIV testing. You should be able to rely on your negative tests.

Prozone effect in RPR can occur in secondary syphilis. Your negative result is unlikely to be due to prozone. Prozone is not relevant for HIV testing. Quit worrying about STDs. For your peace of mind you may repeat the test at 6 months after the exposure.
