A member asked:

Im 30 year old male. carotid ultrasound showed mild atherosclerosis and stenosis bilaterally. i have symptoms of heaviness, aching, and cramping in my arms and legs when i exercise. how likely am i to have atherosclerosis in my arms and legs?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Somewhat unusual to have bilateral carotid stenosis at the age of 30 yrs. This suggests a genetic component, or early atherosclerosis secondary to risk factors such as hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, or hypertension. Would also check homocysteine levels. Might be beneficial to have this fully evaluated with NIVA studies of arteries in limbs.
