There are a large number of strains of HPV and most of those are harmless. Do not stress over this. Condom does not fully protect against HPV. Get PAP tests as recommended by your doctor and do not lose sleep over it. Blaming one party or the other is not useful. Before the vaccine, studies in college clinics noted over half of females examined had evidence of HPV. The early vaccine protected against fewer strains than the newer one. The strains when shared by a couple do not recur like strep throat. Once they clear each person is immune, although they can re-emerge.

While it is infrequent, HPV can be contracted non sexually. The human papillomavirus is quite hardy. It is not easily destroyed by heat, drying, and alcohol-based disinfectants. HPV can survive in the environment for several days. They are found on moist surfaces, fomites (like towels), and hospital instruments. Most people will clear the virus. some may have recurrences.
