Your doctor is mistaken or you misunderstood. The large majority of newly positive Pap smears or HPV in your situation are reactivation of past infection, not a new one. Of course HPV is sexually transmitted, so new infection is possible, and you should have a sensitive discussion with your husband. But if he denies other partners and you have no other reason to distrust him, you can believe him.
