The typical steroid doses for polymyalgia are much less, in the range of 10-20 mg Prednisone. Your prescriber should be aware of your hyperglycemia so that steroid doses can be adjusted properly.

Whatever is causing your hyperglycemia is a secondary matter. Please consult with your doctor and a nutritionist to make sure that you control you blood sugar and aim to keep A1c below 7. It is unlikely that the blood glucose will go down meaningfully even if discontinue Dexamethasone. Wish you good health!
