A member asked:

Hi doctors. how long is considered to be too long a time between bowel movements? what would be the first step or first type of treatment intervention for either long time between bowel movements or very hard constipation when straining and pushing?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

If you eat daily, you should poop daily. Failing to empty leaves the material in the large bowel where that organs' only job is removing/recycling water, making it dryer. Initial efforts to rehab a slow bowel require emptying anything too hard near the anus and training the body to empty no less than daily. Initial emptying may require an enema. Adding daily MiraLAX can also help.
