A member asked:

In an event of a common bile duct stone, is it always necessary to have jaundice for the patient or is it perfectly normal to have a stone in the duct but the jaundice continues to remain absent?

Jaundice occurs when the bile flow is completely blocked. If the stone is impacted but the bile still flows, jaundice may not happen. It is almost the same with a stone stuck in the ureter and urine is still able to flow through so the urine won't be backed up in the kidney. If the bile doesn't back up to the liver, jaundice will be absent or very mild, if present, only detected by blood test.
