A member asked:

A little doubt on this thing: recently my friend had a common bile duct blockage from a stone which caused him jaundice and elevation of lfts. what exactly causes jaundice and temporarily affects the liver in this case of obstruction?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The obstruction in the common bile duct causes a backup of bile and also congestion back into the liver. This leads to the jaundice and elevated liver enzymes. When the obstruction is relieved, in time the jaundice and elevated liver enzymes will improve although the skin discoloration takes a little longer than the blood tests to improve.
