Geographic tongue can be quite painful and can result in sores if irritation occurs. Try to avoid foods that seem to irritate it. Typically, geographic tongue comes and goes and it is not known specifically what causes it in most cases. There are no specific treatments except avoiding irritants. If the diagnosis is unclear, see your doctor. Overall, it is benign but that doesn’t make it hurt less!
