That depends: That depends on how big the abscess is. Toxins produced by the abscess can neutralize the local anesthetic and make it so you don't get numb as well. Antibiotics should help shrink the abscess so the "novacaine" will work better. Also the smaller the abscess the faster you will heal after the extraction. If your dentist said to take it, i would.

Yes: It can be very hard or immposible to get the tooth numb if it is infected, an oral surgeon can sedate you and that the tooth out with it infected while u are unconcious, i prefer to have my pt.S on antibiotics for at least a week and 10 days if the infection is large.

No such rule: There is no such rule regarding this postponement in treatment. In my opinion, and i fully understand other dentists may disagree with me, in almost all cases, especially with otherwise healthy individuals, the sooner the cause of the infection is addressed the better.There are some exceptions to this policy. Rarely, if ever, had a problem doing it this way in 40 years. It's a prof judgment call.
