More than one cause: Hammer toe is caused by arthritis of the small joints in your toes.Discoloration could be a sign of circulation problems.See your doctor for evaluation.

Hammertoes : The discoloration in the big toes can be problems with circulation. Hammertoes occur when there's an imbalance of the tendons around the toe joints. Are you wearing very tight high-heeled shoes? Did you used to do ballet? Does your mom have hammertoes also? These all can be contributing factors. See your podiatrist about the toes, make a pair of orthotics to help balance the toe pressures.

Get evaluated: In person. Many causes of hammertoes. I'm not sure i would think of nerve damage due to discoloration, i would have other differentials first.

A contracted toe: A hammertoe is an contracture or a bending of the toe joint which results from a muscle or tendon imbalance due to the mechanical or structural changes in the foot. This can be hereditary or due to environmental factors such as tight shoes. This bending can lead to abnormal pressure distribution resulting in pain, swelling, blistering, and corns.
