Yes: Yes, it could be. Let your doctor know about the toe numbness. A emg/ncv and/or some low back imaging is likely needed.

If you hurt your : Back and feeling numb to the great toe, a pinched nerve is certainly a possibility. Color changes in skin can occur with nerve related injuries though on/off the way you describe seems unusual.
