If you eat only one single thing, you will soon be tired of it and you will eat much less than you would normally eat. You will eat less calories and lose weight, but you will also put yourself at risk for all kind of defficiencies and you will definitely not be able to sustain such a "diet".

No. Potatoes along is not a healthful diet. You need to reduce your intake of food. Depending on how overweight you are you may need to reduce your intake by half or more. For healthy diet: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/., exercise 30 minutes/day, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs.
