It isn't certain such testing ever will be routinely available or recommended, or that it would help prevent cancer. A big problem is that a negative test never is proof HPV is absent. Only one HPV type (HPV16) really is important as a cause of pharyngeal cancer. Vaccination probably is the best option. Fortunately, although pharyngeal cancer due to HPV is rising, it remains rare.
