Lymph nodes contain immune cells and get enlarged when there is local inflammation or infection. They are typically small, round, painful, and mobile. These resolve when the infection does. However, if they persist, or are rather large, growing, non-mobile, and non-tender, then these should get double checked, sometimes with a scan and biopsy. They can also be confused for cysts or lipomas.
