It is more likely that the gingiva is covering the distal half of your third molar, no your second molar. If that was where you were having pain, you may want to consider extracting it.

Please return to your Dentist with a written list of questions. Don't trust the questions to your memory. Add to the liist that you have posted above whether you should have your wisdom teeth evaluated by an Oral Surgeon. It may very well be an operculum over a 3rd molar (wisdom tooth), but a physical examination and possibly x-ray may be needed to determine appropriate treatment.

Is your wisdom tooth[third molar] fully or partially erupted? Either way it is common for tissue to grow over the tooth or adjacent tooth if the wisdom tooth is partially erupted. This is called PERICORNITIS and you often bite on it causing pain. This tissue can be surgically removed and is an easy procedure. A general dentist or an oral surgeon can do this procedure.
