How do you know your eye nerve is being damaged due to high blood pressure?

Retinal exam by an ophthalmologist can discover these changes over time. They require years to develop & by the time they appear much of the damage is not reversable. I know of no other method to detect these changes very early. The same thing applies to kidney damage, although there are other ways to monitor the changes in that organ.
