A member asked:

Why does my doctor say that he couldn't get my bp even with manual reading? what is the range of manual sphygmomanometer? if my bp was really that low w/altered mental status, will that cause any long term damage to my brain?

If you were conscious & breathing, then he should have been able to obtain a manual blood pressure. That is just human error. Without knowing the full details of what happened to you in that situation, it is impossible to predict your long term prognosis.

Yes, in certain pathologic conditions, blood pressure can be extremely difficult to measure manually. Examples: a person with severe atherosclerotic vessel disease blood pressure could not be assessed manually or when systolic pressure is less than 60-70, our ear could not recognize the first sound. Acute drop in BP causes altered mental status and it only causes permanent damage if prolonged.
