The ESR is a crude test that can remain elevated for months after all the germs of an infection are killed. Duration of antibiotic treatments are based on research that defines how long to use them/too long creates problems. While it is elevated, it is normal to be so during recovery. I would worry less about amputation and spend more time discussing your fear with your doc.

An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measures how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube sample. Normally, red blood cells settle relatively slowly. A faster-than-normal rate may indicate inflammation in the body but this is non specific. Please discuss your lab results in its entirety with a hospital follow up with your surgeon and primary care

Sedimentation rate is a nonspecific sign of inflammation in the body. It is possible that it is high because of your infection. This number tells us nothing about the need for amputation. Please speak with the physician that ordered the test to discuss its significance with your specific case.
