A member asked:

Does a non-tppa test tell if you active infection or just antibodies? like an rpr quantitative? is a treponema test more accurate to determine if infection is active? can rpr titer fluctuation occur in treated patients with hiv?

RPR and VDRL are sensitive tests to detect active syphilis so we use them for screening but false positive result can occur so we use TPA for confirmation. RPR or VDRL will be negative when you are cured but TPA test will stay positive for the rest of your life. HIV infection can cause false positive RPR test but not false negative.
