RPR and VDRL are sensitive tests to detect active syphilis so we use them for screening but false positive result can occur so we use TPA for confirmation. RPR or VDRL will be negative when you are cured but TPA test will stay positive for the rest of your life. HIV infection can cause false positive RPR test but not false negative.
