A member asked:

Is constipation alone sign of cancer. i always had constipation on and off for years and years. i can't go 2-3 times out of 7 days of the week. no blood in stool. how accurate is the fit stool test at assessing risk for colon cancer?

Constipation is not the definitive sign of cancer. FIT is over 90% accurate.

Constipation alone, specifically chronic like in your case does not suggest cancer and a positive FIT test has to be followed by specific tests in order to confirm a diagnosis.

Constipation per se is not an indicator of colon cancer. FIT stool tests for bleeding in the lower intestine, not cancer per se. Unless you have family history of early onset, colon cancer, your risk is low. You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods.
