Can costochondritis also cause back pain? aching in sternum and upper back/spine, all cardiac work ups are normal?

The term "costochondritis" is used for the inflammation of the costochondral joints of the anterior part of the rib cage. You could have costovertebral joint dysfunction at the same time which causes the upper back pain.
